LEADS AND BREAKS DRILL
PURPOSE: To allow players to practice getting good reads on pitchers to get good jumps when stealing and avoid being picked off.
EQUIPMENT: None needed SET-UP: Players spread out along the foul line in the outfield. Coach(es) stands where pitcher would be in relation to the runners. EXECUTION: Players take their lead from the foul line (the foul line acts as first base). Coach goes into the stretch and either pretends to pitch the ball or attempt a pick off. Players watch the coach, if he delivers home they steal (take off running) if the coach pretends to attempt a pick off, the player gets back to the line and repeats process. COACHING TIP: Once players steal they will be in the outfield, if coach simply runs to the other side of the line (towards outfield fence) then coach will be in same relation to runners as pitchers would be, then the process can be repeated going back to the foul line. Coaches should vary their looks, change their pick off moves, sometimes be a righty, sometimes a lefty to ensure players get a variety of practice. "I have players do leads and breaks before they even are allowed to lead off, this way when leading off is allowed, it won't seem so awkward."
