HIT & RUN BATTING PRACTICE DRILL
ooNPURPOSE: To practice the hit and run play by attempting to hit any pitch hard on the ground.
EQUIPMENT: Balls, Bat, L-Screen SET-UP: Set up is the same as any regular batting practice drill. L screen recommended. EXECUTION: Batter steps up to the plate as if the hit & run sign has been given. That means the runner on first base is stealing and the hitter must swing and attempt to hit the ball hard on the ground. Therefore every pitch thown by the coach the hitter should swing, even when the pitch is out of the strike zone. Players should strive to hit the ball hard on the ground and avoid a chopping motion. COACHING TIPS: Make sure when throwing batting practice to challenge your players by going up in the zone to make sure they can get on top of the pitch and hit that hard grounder. Those high pitches can many times lead to missed swings and thrown out runners, or pop ups and doubled up runners. COACHING TIPS: Purposely throw bad pitches to ensure players are only swinging at strikes. "The hit and run play can be super effective as it creates big holes in the infield, what a perfect time for that hard ground ball." -Coach Tim |
