GET AROUND IT
PURPOSE: To teach outfielders the proper technique when fielding balls down the lines and in the gap so they can more likely prevent base runners from taking extra bases.
EQUIPMENT: Baseballs SET-UP: Outfielders take their positions and coach will appropriately hit line drives/ground balls down the lines and into the gaps. EXECUTION: Players should concentrate on getting around the baseball when fielding it in a manner that there momentum is going towards the base they will be throwing to. An example of executing this drill is for a coach to hit a ball down the left field line. As the leftfielder fields the baseball they should focus on circling around it, so that as they field it their momentum is going towards second base. This will enable them to make a strong throw towards 2nd and prevent a double. A rightfielder would do the same on a ball hit down the right field line. A centerfielder may have to circle around the ball on either gap. See photo/video for more details. COMING SOON. MODIFICATIONS: Not only should players be able to execute this skill on ground balls, but they can also get around fly balls in order to make a stronger throw when players are attempting to tag up on fly balls. "It's the little things in baseball that can sometimes make a big difference, imagine your outfielder preventing the runner from advancing to second base on a ball down the line, this keeps the runner out of scoring position and minimizes his chance at scoring."
