 FIELDERS VS. RUNNERS

PURPOSE:  To prepare infielders for game like situations by having them make plays trying to get out real base runners.

EQUIPMENT:  Ball and Glove

SET-UP:  Infielders will take their normal position and teammates will act as runners trying to beat out the play.

EXECUTION:  Runners should start just behind home plate, once contact is made runner takes off towards first base.  The infielder must attempt to make the play and throw out the base runner before they get to first base.

MODIFICATIONS:  Coaches should set up different situations, maybe have real runners at home and first and have infielders execute the double play.

COACHING TIPS:  This is also a great time for your team to practice getting down the baseline as quick as possible, as infielders play defense, outfielders can get extra running practice.

"There is simply no substitute for having to throw out a real base runner.  A player can take grounders all day, but eventually they need to prove they can make the play in a game situation.  This drill should be implemented by coaches all the time!"
