 BOX DRILL

PURPOSE:  To enhance outfielders ability to track down fly balls in all directions.

EQUIPMENT:  Baseballs, 4 cones

SET-UP:  Coach sets up a box by putting a cone at each corner, box should be approximately 50 ft. by 50 ft.  Size of box can be adjusted according to age/ability of players.  Coach stands approximately 20 feet outside the box.  Outfield positions themselves at one of the 4 corners.

EXECUTION:  Coach will throw fly balls to outfielder as the player works their way from corner to corner.  Say for example the fielder begins in the front left corner, they will be running straight back to the back left corner to make the catch, they would then be running left to the next cone, forward to the next, and right to the last.  By working from corner to corner, player has opportunity to work on going all directions.

COACHING TIP:  Have your player set their feet and make a strong throw back in after each catch, that way they will not only practice tracking down the fly balls, but also getting strong and accurate throws in from all angles.

"The box drill ensures that outfielders practice catching balls in all directions."
