4 SEAM ROTATION

PURPOSE:  Teach players to throw with proper 4 seam rotation.  Make it easier for developing players to obtain proper grip.

EQUIPMENT: Baseball & colored tape

SET-UP: Coach should tape each throwing baseball (see photo) so that when players throw with proper 4 seam rotation there is a colored stripe down the center of the baseball when thrown.

EXECUTION: Every time your players play catch at the beginning of practice they should be using these taped baseballs.  This simple trick provides players with immediate feedback if their throws have proper rotations.  When players throw with 4 seam rotation they will throw with greater arm strength and more accuracy.

MODIFICATIONS:  Rather than taping your baseballs you can also use a permanent marker to draw a thick line.

COACHING TIPS:  It is super fun to use the same color tape as your team color!

"This drill is awesome and these baseballs should be used EVERY time your team plays catch.  If you want your players to throw harder with more accuracy, then make sure they are throwing with 4 seam rotation."

When this ball is properly thrown there will be a perfect black stripe down the middle as it travels through the air.

If you need more baseballs, check out the Mark 1 practice balls.  I purchased some 10 years ago and still use them.  They are definitely one of the best valued practice balls out there.  Remember to get that electrical tape to create your throwing baseballs.
