REPLACEMENT REPS
PURPOSE: To assist in the development of player's ability to execute the replacement method (the fastest and most effective way) when attempting to throw out base stealers.
EQUIPMENT: Baseballs, infielder/target SET-UP: Catcher takes their normal crouch behind home plate as if there is a runner on first base. Coach/teammate will eventually throw pitches to them. EXECUTION: Catcher will first execute the replacement method without a baseball. The replacement method is the quickest way of getting the ball to second base and involves simply switching the feet from the crouch into a direct line to second base. Without a ball catcher practices proper footwork, each time coming up into a "T-position" as if about to throw to second. Next the catcher executes this drill with a pitch thrown at them, they catch the ball, as their feet are lining up to second base and again get into their "T-postion" without throwing the ball. Finally catcher goes through whole process this time throwing down to second base or a closer target if need be. MODIFICATIONS: Have catchers throw a shorter distance when learning as the replacement method requires an extremely strong arm. COACHING TIP: Even if your players cannot properly execute this techniques, have them practice as eventually it will be a skill that most good catchers can execute. "All catcher's should strive to be able to throw out runners using the replacement method as it is the quickest and most effective way of throwing out runners."
